Editor’s note: Cole Haan makes products for passionate people who are not afraid to buck the status quo. Mike Cherman, founder of the streetwear company Chinatown Market in Los Angeles, is one of these people whose story Cole Haan was inspired to share. “We were excited to partner with Cole Haan as it was a collaboration that our community wouldn’t expect and a brand we felt the need to introduce our consumers to,” Cherman said.
When he was growing up, Cherman said his dress shoes were uncomfortable and not something he was proud of.The creative output is generated by a small team of emerging creatives who work to see their designs realized, but also to prepare themselves for launching their own brands. Most are younger than 25, their early careers standing in stark contrast to the one Cherman endured.
Reeling, Cherman moved to Los Angeles and regrouped. He was working freelance when a friend offered him a free booth at a major industry event in 2016. “So while I had done something that didn't go so well for me, it actually ended up opening the door for a lot of conversations,” Cherman reflected. “All through the attitude of asking for forgiveness instead of asking for permission. A lot of big brands don't want to have a conversation with you until you've disrupted that world.”
Gabriela Levitt, applied for an illustrator job and now spends her days creating the designs that adorn much of Chinatown Market’s apparel.
