It's come a long way since September 1, 1874. Today the heritage-listed landmark GPO building at 1 Martin Place begins another chapter.

The daytime shift was staffed by some 30 women with the night shift covered by young men. She said the American operators used to get confused between Austria and Australia. She also connected daily scheduled weather calls to Antarctica.She also got to know some male operators through making 'ships at sea' connections to the P&O liners cruising in the Pacific.

"A bloke with a canvas bag would pile a million parcels on to your desk and I ran the marking stamp over them and threw them down the hole and they disappeared on a conveyor belt. We worked from 5am until 6pm the 10 days before Christmas and for that I got £24 - that was a fortune for me."
