The Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP) on Monday asked the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to protect meat workers who might be possibly laid off due to the cases of African Swine Fever in the country.

The labor group particularly urged the labor department to release an “emergency employment plan” for these workers.

“DA has reported P1-billion loss per month in the industry, but there is no calculation yet on how the ASF has costed labor in terms of rotations, layoffs and extended work hours,” he added. BMP also asked the Occupational Safety and Health Center of DOLE to tighten health and sanitation regulations in the agriculture and food manufacturing sector.
