With a reported R363 billion in pledges having been made, the SA Investment Conference, which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre over three days earlier this week, has been described by several business delegates as a “resounding success”.

The SA Investment Conference , which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre over three days earlier this week, has been described by several business delegates as a “resounding success”.

“Of the 31 projects announced in 2018, eight have been completed and the money has been spent, and 17 are in their construction or implementation phase ... In total, this represents R238 billion of investments that were announced last year,” said the president. Added Makhaya: “We have three years to go and we are more than halfway there. Of course, we have to be careful because many of the projects are multiyear projects. We think we are on track, but we also have to monitor very closely how the projects progress.”

Makhaya said the idea behind the inclusion of SOEs was that government was trying to improve the economic environment and, as businesses, the SOEs should also play their part.“These are SOEs that raise money in capital markets all over the world, and they would not be able to raise that money if the environment was hostile,” she said, adding that “the SOEs would not have money if funders were not willing”.

Sandile Zungu, president of the Black Business Council, said the organisation was happy with this year’s conference and the money raised as it showed that the gathering was not just a talk shop. “I would be sceptical if they announced monies they got from Treasury as their budget allocations. They are committing new money and I do not see why they should not be able to participate,” he added.
