Business owners said they feel 'trapped'

Businesses on an industrial park say they are at "breaking point" after an alleged infestation of flies has taken over the estate. Business owners on Speke Business Park claim problems arose after a plastic recycling plant opened next door and that staff are now "refusing to come into work" due to the issues.

"The Christmas just gone, we had a national contract for decorations but they were ridden with flies and maggots. We had to pay compensation and it's just really bad for the brand." Neil told the ECHO: “As the day goes on it gets worse and the hotter it gets, the worse it gets. We can’t eat here and I’ve got staff screaming at me and refusing to come into work.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: “The Council has recently received complaints about this issue and an Environmental Health Enforcement Officer visited businesses. As a result of this visit the Council has contacted the Environment Agency, who are responsible for permitting the site and its operation, and asked them to investigate the matter further.

"For the record, Pasha Recycling were first placed on notice of the issue regarding the fly infestation in April 2024. This is therefore not a long-standing issue, as has been portrayed. Upon being placed on notice of this issue, we took prompt steps to inspect and engage professional pest control service providers to carry out regular maintenance and implement preventative measures at our site.
