Community colleges across Ohio have seen a decline in student enrollment. But colleges are working on new ways to bring students back to campus.

across the U.S. grew by 3 million during the Great Recession, many of those new students were adult learners, according to a 2018 U.S. Census report. Enrollment levels of those students, older than 25 who either returned to college after being in the labor market or who weren't previously employed, grew by 30% from 2006 to 2010.

"For higher ed, that worker expectation lengthened the usual period of time before people would enroll for education and skills development after the recession started,” Jones said. "We found that we had a definite mix of students who enjoyed and appreciated the online education and those who were really waiting for more of our in-person sections to come back," Polk-Bland said.
