Lily Mine ex-workers threaten to go underground

Lily Mine

in Barberton, Mpumalanga, are threatening to go underground to retrieve a container in which three people were trapped and killed after it collapsed when the mine caved in three years ago. The angry workers have been camping at the mine for about ten days now. Their aim is to get the attention of mine management and government.

“No response we are getting from the government as a whole. So we have resorted that the waiting is enough now, because it’s over three years. We’ve been waiting and nothing is happening. So we took this resolution as a collective resolution. As I said we want to go down and do something aiming to retrieve the container ourselves because nobody is helping us up to this far,” says one of the former workers, Herry Mazibuko.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: AngloGold Ashanti puts a for sale sign on the world’s deepest mineAfrica’s top gold producer, AngloGold Ashanti, is putting the last of its South African assets up for sale. Anglo American exited from gold years ago and looks like it is here to stay as it makes money from platinum, iron ore and diamonds. But the last of the bullion assets linked to its name is bound to provoke some feelings of nostalgia. Yet nothing is set in stone and not many companies have the technical ability to run Mponeng, the world’s deepest mine, which is included in the sale.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: MINE SAFETY: South Africa’s mines are becoming safer — 2019 could be a banner year if current trends are sustainedSibanye-Stillwater had a brief scare last week when 1,800 workers at its Thembelani platinum mine were briefly stuck underground after some rails that were being transported below surface fell down a shaft. Within a matter of hours, all the miners were hoisted safety to the surface. The incident, which was rare and resulted in no casualties, highlights an often-overlooked trend in South Africa’s deep and dangerous mines — fatalities and injuries have for the most part been falling. Mining in SA is becoming safer, but work still needs to be done to close the gap with other mining jurisdictions, such as Australia.
