Josh Bell, a second-tier free agent first baseman, is signing with the Washington Nationals despite the team recently acquiring Nathaniel Lowe. Bell, 32, hit 19 home runs and 71 RBIs for the Marlins and Diamondbacks last season. He is expected to serve as the Nationals' designated hitter, a role he filled 45 times in 2024. The Nationals struggled with their designated hitters last year, posting a .372 slugging percentage.
Bell could provide a power boost, having hit a career-high 37 home runs in 2019 with the Pirates. He has averaged 21 homers a year in the five non-pandemic seasons since.
