The German government faced scrutiny following a deadly car-ramming attack at a Christmas market, attributing the incident to a mentally disturbed suspect. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser acknowledged the difficulty in preventing such attacks and stressed the need to adapt security measures to address individuals driven by conspiracy theories and psychological disturbances.

The German government, facing criticism for failing to prevent a deadly car-ramming attack at a Christmas market, stated on Monday that the tragedy may have been difficult to avert and indicated that the suspect appeared to be mentally disturbed. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, alongside security and intelligence chiefs, responded to questioning by a parliamentary committee regarding the attack, which resulted in five fatalities and over 200 injuries.

They were asked about potential missed clues and security shortcomings. Faeser disclosed that no motive had been established for the December 20th attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where a Saudi-born doctor who had resided in Germany for years was apprehended. However, she expressed that 'there are striking signs of a pathological psyche.' She emphasized the need to learn from this event regarding how to monitor potential attackers who deviate from conventional threat profiles and who 'are psychologically disturbed and... driven by confused conspiracy theories.' The minister asserted that 'such attackers do not fit any threat profile'—such as far-right extremists or Islamists—and cautioned that German security services will require 'other indicators and action plans' to address them in the future. The suspect, identified as Taleb A. by German authorities, has been named as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen by BBC News and the AFP news agency. He arrived in Germany in 2006 and received refugee status ten years later. Police apprehended him at the scene of the attack, where a motor vehicle was utilized as a weapon—a method previously employed in jihadist attacks. In 2016, an Islamic extremist drove a truck through a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 people and injuring dozens more. The attacker was killed in a shootout days later. That same year, ISIS claimed responsibility after another attacker killed 86 people in a truck rampage in the French city of Nice
