New Building Planned for Harrisburg's Broad Street Market

Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams announced plans to construct a new building at the Broad Street Market. The mayor aims to fund the project through insurance money and grant funds, avoiding any financial burden on taxpayers. EXCLUSIVE | The General Assembly began a new session on Tuesday.

As new lawmakers were sworn in, CBS 21's Elise Person asked State Senator Patty Kim and Representative Nate Davidson if they would approve state grant money to go towards a new building at the Broad Street Market. 'Once we look at all the needs, what insurance can pay, what the city can pay, I’m happy to have a conversation because I really want to see this back and running for the neighbors and the vendors,' Kim said.'It’s one of my goals in this legislative session to find additional state resources to rebuild the market, whether it’s for a new structure or just to put the brick building back the way it was,' Davidson said. The proposed new building would be situated between the existing stone and brick structures. These plans were announced by the city while the brick building, which burnt down in July 2023, remains inoperable. Despite the new plans, the city maintains that reopening the brick building remains a top priority, with a projected timeline for completion by late 2026. Rep. Davidson added, 'When I talk to my neighbors, they want two things: they want the brick building back the way it was as soon as possible, and if there's enough for an additional structure, that would be great.' Sen. Kim also noted, 'I’m gonna be looking at my counterparts in the House to see what we can bring together to help the Broad Street Market go back to a better place, but we have to see what’s ahead and what the actual needs are.' Kim said before they can vote on any money, they need to really sit down and look at the market's needs
