We spoke to newsletter creators delia_cai of Deez Links, packyM of notboringclub, aleksnotalex of discourse_blog, and danshipper and nbashaw of the Everything newsletter bundle to learn how they're building an audience on Substack.

Discourse Blog, which converted to a paid product on July 6, generated more than $60,000 in subscriptions in a matter of days. The newsletter recently published an open thread, allowing readers to leave comments and ask questions. Within 90 minutes, says Chan, they had hundreds of responses, almost all of which were positive.

By encouraging this sense of camaraderie, newsletters can turn their readers into evangelists who feel invested in the success of the project, a valuable asset for a growing publisher.Dan Shipper and Nathan Baschez, creators of the Everything Substack bundle.Striking the balance between revenue and reach is critical for paid newsletters, where content lies partially behind a paywall.

"At the top of the funnel are our free articles," says Shipper, "and those are targeted at a broader group of people that probably haven't heard of us. They're also articles that have a higher chance of going viral."
