Critics have always underestimated Tesla, and may the same mistake with the company's controversial self-driving tech

Critics have consistently underestimated Tesla and CEO Elon Musk over the years.

That choice has fueled skepticism about Tesla's chances — and spurred yet another round of underestimation.Starting as an obscure, scrappy startup with electric-car dreams and one notable investor in Elon Musk, it's gone from selling a few thousand expensive sports cars to potentially delivering half a million vehicles across the globe in 2020.

At no point during this epic period — unprecedented in the car business, as even Henry Ford found himself in a dogfight of competition not long after he established the Ford Motor Company 117 years ago — have Tesla critics backed off of their thesis that the company is just a quarter or two from going bust.

Full self-driving, or FSD, has long been controversial because while Tesla's semi-autonomous system, "Autopilot," has been around for years, it can't operate a vehicle without being monitored by a human.
