Burberry chief financial officer Julie Brown smashed the glass ceiling. She has 4 tips for women looking to become leaders.

and start reading now.

Brown is a finance and business veteran. She worked for almost a decade at the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, taking different senior financial and commercial roles. She was then appointed chief financial officer at the manufacturing firm Smith & Nephew, where she remained for four years before joining Burberry in 2016, the high-end fashion brand known for its distinctive tartan patterns and trench coats.

In spite of the challenges, Brown has advice to offer women who are on the path to a leadership role. Here are her four tips:"You know what you can offer. Don't feel put off by all the things you can't do well," Brown said. Don't let imposter syndrome take over.If something makes you feel good about yourself, do it. Your mind has a powerful impact on what you want to achieve, so believe in your aspirations, she said.

In Brown's case, it began with healthcare: "My father died when I was 18 years old and it was a tragic situation, so healthcare meant a lot to me from the very beginning [of my career]," she said. While in politics you may lose your constituents, in business you may lose your colleagues or team if you aren't understanding and caring. So think about people, and put them first whenever you can.

Care about your team No matter what level you are in the organization 'people will determine your success,' Brown said.

Choose a company that supports talent 'If I was to write a letter to my 16-year-old self, I would say, 'Ensure you choose a company that has good talent management processes that really support talent',' Brown said.

'You can't just have the power, you've got to have the empathy, otherwise you'll lose,' she said, citing a speech by Australia's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, on how being a woman in business or in public life involves walking a tightrope between power and empathy
