A San Antonio man was sentenced Wednesday to five years of house arrest for preparing false tax returns and running an unregistered business for three years.

Richard Medina Sr., 68, ran an unregistered tax return preparation business from 2013 to 2016 in which he prepared false federal income tax returns for clients. Medina claimed false credits, individual retirement accounts and itemized deductions for his clients. And he fraudulently maximized tax credits to generate undue tax refunds, resulting in a loss of more than $273,000, according to the Department of Justice.Consultant admits to tax fraud; made millions using law authored by San Antonio senator

In addition to committing tax fraud, Medina lied under oath about the income from his tax preparation business when he filed for bankruptcy in 2013.
