Mining fatalities drop by 10% in SA via SABCNewsOnline

There has been 10% decrease in mine fatalities in 2018, compared to the previous year. This is according to Mine Health and Safety Statistics released in Pretoria on Friday.Regarding occupational injuries, there was 12% increase in the number of injuries, from 2 669 in 2017 to 2 350 last year.

“Mine fatalities should never be handled emotionally because if you do that we’ll set the industry alight. I’m beginning to appreciate that. What is important is that when there are fatalities, we must deal with fatalities. We must analyse them. Get reports. Seek to improve them. Criminal charges cannot be a formula for dealing with mine accidents.”

Mineral Council of South Africa’s Andile Sangqu says they ate saddened that 81 colleagues lost their lives. “One life lost is one life too many. We sympathise with the deceased miners.”

Should drop by 100%. Human life is more important than profit.

I hope you have taken into account the fact that some of the mines have stopped operations and there’s been retrenchment as well, because less workers could mean less mortality.
