America was built using it. In 2015, the mine employed a peak of 88 miners, according to data from the Department of Labor. But the price of coal fell by nearly a quarter that same year. Just two years later, the mine had laid off all but a couple of workers and produced its last ton of coal.In the years that followed, the mine racked up violation after violation, for things like failing to submit water quality reports, and for polluting nearby waterways well over their federal legal limit.
