China has imposed sanctions on seven US companies in retaliation for recent US military aid and sales to Taiwan.

The Chinese government imposed sanctions on seven companies on Friday in response to recent US announcements regarding military sales and aid to Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims as part of its territory. The sanctions are also a response to the recent approval of the US government's annual defense spending bill, which, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, “includes multiple negative sections on China”.

China opposes US military assistance to Taiwan and often imposes sanctions on related companies after a sale or aid package is announced. The sanctions usually have a limited impact, because US defense companies do not sell weapons or other military goods to China. The United States is the main supplier of arms to Taiwan for its defense. The seven sanctioned companies are Insitu Inc., Hudson Technologies Co., Saronic Technologies, Inc., Raytheon Canada, Raytheon Australia, Aerkomm Inc. and Oceaneering International Inc., according to the Foreign Ministry statement. Likewise, sanctions are imposed on the “relevant high-level executives” of the companies, without naming any. Any assets they have in China will be frozen, and organizations and individuals in China are prohibited from participating in any activities with them, it stated. US President Joe Biden authorized last week up to 571 million dollars in material and services, as well as military education and training, from the Department of Defense for Taiwan. Furthermore, the Department of Defense announced the approval of 295 million dollars in military sales. The US defense bill increases military spending to 895 billion dollars and allocates resources to a more confrontational approach with China
