AI startup Anthropic has settled a copyright infringement lawsuit partially, agreeing to protect copyrighted music in its AI training.

Anthropic has partially resolved a legal dispute with music publishers over copyright infringement. In October 2023, Universal Music and ABKCO, among others, alleged that Anthropic's Claude AI model was trained on copyrighted songs without permission, potentially enabling it to reproduce lyrics. The agreement reached on Thursday requires Anthropic to maintain safeguards against reproducing copyrighted material and implement these measures in future AI model training.

Anthropic also promises to address copyright concerns promptly and provide detailed responses outlining its plans. While the company maintains that Claude is not designed for infringement and that training AI models on copyrighted material falls under fair use, the music publishers are still pursuing an injunction to prevent future unauthorized use of song lyrics in AI training
