EXMAR, a Belgian shipping company, has ordered six dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carriers, set to be equipped with cutting-edge ammonia dual-fuel engines. The first two vessels, Champagny and Courchevel, were christened on January 6th. While the first two operate on a dual-fuel system, the remaining four will run solely on ammonia. The vessels are designed with energy-efficient technologies like shaft generators and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices to minimize emissions.

The maritime industry is facing increasingly strict regulations on greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, ammonia is gaining attention as a potential next-generation fuel solution. This innovative engine technology provides the vessel with the flexibility to utilize both conventional marine fuels and ammonia. This vessel is ordered by EXMAR, a Belgian shipping company, and is set to be equipped with a cutting-edge ammonia dual-fuel engine.

“Today, we proudly named the first two vessels of our current New Building program: Champagny and Courchevel,” said EXMAR in a LinkedInWhen burned, ammonia does not release any carbon dioxide, making it a crucial tool in the effort to decarbonize shipping and combat climate change.
