There is a growing push from the Coalition backbench to exempt small and medium business from unfair dismissal laws.

A group of about 17 Coalition MPs recently attended an Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry briefing, where they highlighted concerns about the impact of the current industrial relations system on small and medium business.

There is reportedly growing momentum from the backbench to make it easier for those businesses to let go of non-performing staff, without fear of an unfair dismissal claim being lodged against them. Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter is currently reviewing Australia's IR system, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison is promising any changes will be based on evidence, not conservative ideology.
