Supporters of republican presidential candidate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney stand next to a national debt clock during a rally at Exeter High School on January 8, 2012 in Exeter, New Hampshire.President Trump, the Democratic presidential candidates, and Congress aren't taking the national debt seriously.Maya MacGuineas is the president of the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
This situation has economic consequences that ripple to all areas of our national strength. Excessively high levels of debt can slow economic growth by crowding out private investment in favor of public debt and limiting the government's flexibility to respond to a future downturn or crisis. Of the many investments we need to make to strengthen our situation, we cannot afford them either in terms of available resources or the borrowing capacity required to help spread the costs. We should be getting our fiscal house in order while the economy is relatively strong, but instead we appear to be doing nothing.
MayaMacGuineas BudgetHawks The national debt is not a problem in any way😴 We know that you guys are dying to slash Social Security and channel the money to your friends on Wall Street... Not.gonna.happen🤷♂️
MayaMacGuineas BudgetHawks What a bunch of crap. Let's look at history. GOP President gives tax cuts to the rich. Deficit booms! (Reagan, W Bush, Trump) Dem President raises taxes on rich, defict falls, economy grows (Clinton, Obama, Biden?) Dems are the true defict hawks.
