The tempo of business activities at the Ojota China Shopping Complex located at Ojota area of Lagos has fallen into an all-time low, no thanks to the news of the ravaging coronavirus which hits Wuhan, in Mainland China on December 31, 2019, reports SAMUEL AWOYINFA
She said the drop in patronage was due to unfounded fear by Nigerians that if they visited China Town they would contract the virus, “simply because the Chinese own this complex and some of them are here overseeing their business.”She said, “We started noticing the drop in patronage by buyers from January this year. Many of them are afraid that if they come here they will contract coronavirus.
She, however, said one of their Chinese bosses that travelled sometime in January to China had yet to return. She said, “The coronavirus scare is real here in China Town, it is like many of our customers have abandoned us. One thing I can assure our customers is that there is no one with coronavirus infection here. We are all free from the virus. That is why you don’t see anyone wearing any face mask.
“I believe the economy is affecting many people, and that is why the surge of customers had reduced drastically. She noted since the coronavirus broke out, prices of goods from China including textiles, shoes, electrical bulbs and other household items had gone up.
