KUCHING: The border village of Serikin - which is normally bustling on weekends - was quiet on Saturday (March 21) due to the movement control order (MCO).

Located about 60km from here, Serikin hosts a popular weekend market with all kinds of goods sold by local and Indonesian traders."Locals are complying with the MCO. Indonesia has also imposed a travel ban on its citizens.

"Today , we can see that there is no transaction or market activity going on here," General Operations Force 11th Battalion commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai told reporters during an enforcement operation in Serikin. He also said the GOF was still carrying out border patrols as usual, not only to enforce the MCO but to check cross-border crime.

This includes putting up roadblocks to enforce the travel ban on Malaysians leaving the country and patrolling"jalan tikus" ."The 'jalan tikus' are part of our target areas which we patrol regularly to prevent smuggling and other illegal activities. "Although the focus is on fighting Covid-19 now, we will not let up in monitoring and patrolling border areas," he said.
