Comment: The Prime Minister believes our companies can act like bears and go into hibernation. But bears go on a feeding frenzy before they hibernate. Australian businesses were not on a frenzy before the pandemic, writes Shane Wright | swrighteconomy

Bears across the northern hemisphere are emerging from their annual hibernation.

At a rhetorical level, it is all about reassuring Australians that once the pandemic has moved on there will be jobs and commerce. At a time of immense uncertainty, reassurance of normality is vital. Before going into hibernation, bears go on a feeding frenzy. They lay down a large amount of fat that enables their bodies to survive the two or three months in which they lay dormant. The summer from hell had already knocked many businesses about.

Bears eat moose, salmon, insects and all manner of plant material but the Australian economy was effectively getting by on gruel with some sugar hits from governments and the RBA. We haven't got to the point of discussing how Australia, so heavily dependent on international visitors and students, is going to reopen these vital markets. We're not even sure how we are going to reopen restaurants and bars when so many people have been scarred by social distancing or self-isolation.And does anyone really expect people to flock back to cruise ships any time soon?

swrighteconomy Your critique is refreshing since bears prepare for the time before their economy slows down. Taking your metaphor further what is the trigger for the hibernation to end? -and in your metaphor what of brown fat which bears have and from memory we humans may have when very young

swrighteconomy The difference is rather, bears know, that there is no such thing as perpetual growth.

swrighteconomy Even today Everything in shops today are OverPriced. How do you pronounce Profiteering?

swrighteconomy Has anyone known a company ever say.... “we have made enough money, now we can have a snooze”. The only goal of a company is to take as mich revenue as possible AND make the greatest profit it can.... Next month..... do it again but at a higher level.

swrighteconomy Bears also develop this massive anal plug when hibernating too.

swrighteconomy I disagree, a good viable buisness owner would prepare a risk management strategy. A pandemic would have to be part of that strategy since early 2000. Businesses in Australia are lucky they also have support from the tax payers and government. Other countries do not.

swrighteconomy Maybe companies shouldn’t give huge bonuses and profits to their Ceos and move their money on tax havens and instead should have a crisis stash for such situations. But instead they choose to keep buying lattes

swrighteconomy Some were.

swrighteconomy Bears have an exit strategy We have a church going happy Clapper turning the coalition into The Aust Socialist & Technocrats Alliance Wish I was a bear 🐻

swrighteconomy Bears that havent gained enough weight before hibernation tend to starve to death. A fair analogy.
