Reducing conflict between Arab corner store owners, Black residents - Business Insider

Corner stores can be hotspots for violence in majority-Black neighborhoods. Here's how one faith-based organization is working to change that.

"As business owners in the city, we used to look at Detroit as just where we do business, and we'd go home to our suburbs," Nasser Beydoun, a Detroit business owner and chairman of the Arab Civil Rights League told Business Insider. While IMAN doesn't have a Detroit office, it has partnered with anti-racist organization MuslimARC for initiatives in the city. "There was a tendency in our community to think we were white and not a minority.

"There were people who would come in the store for 15, 20 years, and never even understand where the storeowner came from," Hemphill said. "That was the first time that store owners that had ever shared his story with residents."
