MANILA - The Philippine economy cannot remain on shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, the country's finance chief said Wednesday, as he called for a "reasonable balance" between protecting public health and livelihood.
"Health and livelihood is not a binary choice. We must protect lives in ways that do not prevent us from earning a living. This is a tough decision to make but we need to do this," he added. Economic experts have said that more Filipinos are expected to lose their jobs in the coming months as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to upend business activity.
"We need to strike a reasonable balance between safeguarding public health and restarting our economy," he added.
