The price of cassava flakes, (one of the Nigerian staple food, popularly known as Garri), has risen significantly in some major markets in Enugu metropolis.

The News Agency of Nigeria correspondent, who visited some markets in Enugu on Saturday, reports that the prices of white and yellow garri had gone up by over 80 per cent.

Miss Oluchi Akubilo, a garri seller at New Market, Enugu said the price of a 4.5-litre bucket of white garri has jumped from N350 before, to N800. Another garri dealer at Garki market, Mr Charles Ukachi, said that a bag of garri previously selling at N12,000 is now selling at between N20,000 and N22,000.

“Due to lack of facilities to preserve the produce after harvesting, many produce go bad, therefore, leading to prices hike,’’ Akubilo told NAN.

You shut down importation to encourage local production. Local farmers are being decimated by herdsmen.

Even common garri is being imported into the country, what is left in the local produce basket? Nigeria needs to evaluate its policies on food importation to avoid filling the streets with living skeletons that has forced certain people to be eating shit as a way out.

Nigeria is a confused nation ruled by blind police makers. The country continues to tighten its urgly grip against importation of food claiming it is to boost local production. How sufficient is local production if the volume produced is far less than local demands?

Thank you Baba. Sai Baba!!

Not in Enugu alone oh
