And I don't consider myself a penny-pincher, but I make a point to buy gifts on sale during the holidays.With a close-knit extended family, a genuine love of gift-giving, and multiple birthdays to celebrate , my spending around the holidays can get out of control — fast. There are usually some people, like my partner and really close friends, whom I'll consult before setting an allowance. We talk about how much we both feel comfortable spending on each other this year so there are no awkward, unequal exchanges later on. It's an especially helpful strategy to use with my partner — since we both have birthdays during the week of Christmas, there has to be some restraint or we'd be broke by New Year's.
