If businesses are preoccupied with raising alarm about climate change and advancing fashionable progressive doctrines, the main result will be an increase in…

The government claims that building an inclusive economy is about “investing in a competitive advantage.” Nonsense. Government support for businesses does not make them more competitive, it relieves them of the need to compete. Only in a free market do businesses compete with each other — to increase innovation, improve efficiency, attract customers and, ultimately, earn profits. When the government takes from some businesses to subsidize others, it is not making anyone more competitive.

Diversity and inclusion are, of course, fine things, and a company that discriminates unfairly against certain groups is unlikely to be successful. However, the government is completely in error in presuming that diversity should be imposed.

The lack of diversity in many settings is not evidence of widespread bigotry requiring government action, but simply the result of different groups of people with different skills pursuing different preferences. There is a stronger preference among Chinese people than white people to work at Chinese restaurants, and the best male hockey players are orders of magnitude better than the best female hockey players.

In fact, before the government again points an accusatory finger at private businesses for a lack of gender parity on corporate boards, it should consider the plank in its own eye.

Few things worse than an ideologically driven government.

Many Business have doe it to themselves with thsi PC woke social engineering.

NatCitizens Why can't we have someone like Makenzie king running this country again. The man tried to really help Canadians

Excellent summary - Business should primarily be about respecting employees, customers, & ethics while giving back to communities the business profits from, all the while recognizing they must compete to survive in a market - this yields jobs to benefit all. matlau10

If they choose to play with social engineering, wouldn't the free market show if they are right or wrong? Why do businesses need to be told what to do by some columnist who's never actually run a business?

Matthew Lau just wants to be left alone to do racism without being bothered.
