Building an amphitheatre for outdoor performances, closing some streets to traffic after 6.30pm and opening a 24-hour market have been touted as ways to draw people back into Sydney’s hard-hit central business district.

“The big challenge that we have to step up to when it comes to the future of the Sydney CBD is to recognise that it’s owned by all of NSW, and I would argue all of Australia and indeed the world,” he said. “We have got to give them a reason to be in our city.” And in an effort to spur pedestrian movements, it also suggested working with the City of Sydney council to fast track plans for “shared streets”, and the closure of more streets after 6.30pm for outdoor dining, performance spaces and free seating areas.Credit:A spokesman for Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore said the report’s recommendations aligned with the council’s vision for the CBD, and it would assess the ideas alongside its existing work.

And it suggests building on the Vivid festival with an ongoing program of lighting displays in the CBD.
