A flagship waste-to-energy project is still in limbo after three years, while Freedom of Information shows cancer-causing toxins would end up in its incinerator ash.

The anchor tenant in a proposed recycling precinct threatened to walk away from its $400 million waste-to-energy project because of three years of state government delays, letters obtained under Freedom of Information show.

Remondis has run a traditional landfill at Ipswich for 25 years and in 2018 proposed Australia’s first waste-to-energy plant at the Ipswich suburb, where it would burn 500,000 tonnes a year to produce enough energy to power 50,000 homes. “If further delays are anticipated, Remondis may be required to redirect the financial backing reserved for this project to alternative investments domestically, or internationally.”

Meanwhile, another letter from Remondis to Ms Palaszczuk on August 26, 2021, reports some toxic “dioxins, furans and some metals” could not be contained by the processing facilities.
