In 2002, Knowles introduced the world’s first micro-electro-mechanical systems microphones under its SiSonic brand. The introduction of the MEMS set the gold standard for miniature microphones and the development addressed several significant challenges that had plagued previous technologies like the Electret Condenser Microphone microphone.
In the 1980s, Knowles began developing and improving its balanced armatures, so they were able to deliver premium sound quality for applications in the music business. By adding the balanced armatures to IEMs used by professional musicians, Knowles improved monitoring and helped to protect the hearing of musicians while performing. It wasn’t long before music enthusiasts were appreciating the improved listening experience that balanced armatures in premium earphones could offer.
“This is an exciting time in the acoustics space,” Kiachian added. “The hearing health category is opening up wide and there is a deep convergence between hearing aids, earphones, and hearable devices. Solutions are now ready to meet the needs of over-the-counter hearing aids, as consumers demand more accessible options for milder hearing loss.
“The impact of voice control technology can be life-changing. Voice control can help people to live richer and more independent lives with an interface that bridges the traditional physical and frustration barriers,” Brian Crannell, Knowles SVP of Corporate Development told me. “To take full advantage of these opportunities as they mature, Knowles sees more and more processing technologies moving to the edge, away from the cloud for improved user interfaces with lower latency.
