Mining will always have environmental impacts, but new approaches could help reduce them as the world digs up more metals for renewable energy

to stand up a $140 million extraction and separation facility to demonstrate the idea at a commercial scale. Hollett called the project an “exciting” opportunity to see whether the hundreds of coal waste sites badly in need of cleanup can also provide something of value.

“Whether it’s a legacy ash pond or a stubbornly persistent acid mine drainage situation, it goes in the direction of being able to address resources from existing legacy materials,” Hollett says. “But there’s a remediation theme here as well.”After miners have extracted everything of value from rocks, the often-toxic waste, called tailings, are usually buried on-site.

Dipple’s research has shown that ultramafic mine tailings can sequester tens of thousands of tons of CO2 a year on their own. But he says that process can be enhanced by a factor of three or four with some relatively simple, low-cost interventions, like churning the tailings to expose fresh rock to the air and adding or removing water from this powdery waste.

Mining is a crime against nature, may it be new age or outdated methods for the very fact that all the minerals and metals are there underneath the earth only to nourish the farms, forests, all the food that we eat and air that we breathe just as the nature had intended it to be.

In the long run, I think the only way to continue the increase in material consumption without sabotaging the Earth is asteroid mining

Child labor?

Now we try to whitewash the mining industry? greenisacon

Go to space. Talk with elonmusk

no

Watch this. Real impact of life lithium mining and processing

NatGeo do we need more metals when polymer is showing another direction and still why are we not looking at non invasive micro desalination more as a form of mining for minerals and metals after that's circular us it not, linear extraction is not and never will be sustainable

Interesting read, but will cleaner be better that is already clean?

Mining is polution business and deadly.

Take Greenwashing to the next level! Learn how a billion dollar industry was created just by hijacking a few simple 'buzzwords' like Circularity CircularEconomy to dupe consumers, landfill & incinerate finite resources and increase profits! All it takes is a few CircularJerks

just STOP MINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That right plume of whatever it is, is a bit obscene.

You can mine CO2 from the atmosphere. Does that cause pollution? Other than heat

Most that have a hybrid/electric don’t take into account how bad the mining is for the chips or battery or whatever. Also that most electric charging stations are still powered by gas. Getting there. Almost.

Could the scientis make big giant vaccum cleaner to suck any poisions gas on the air aaahahah

Those are wind swirls if so..

still need all the machines to mine your lithium, and the mines alone kill an area. take a look around previous, empty ones. how are they looking? fools

I wonder what ecofriendly mining is like.

: L'attività estrattiva avrà sempre un impatto ambientale, ma nuovi approcci potrebbero contribuire a ridurlo mentre il mondo scava più metalli per ottenere energia rinnovabile.

...Great...now...Who start first?...east or west...north or south...all together right now...sweetest song...consume less and better...Why?...

yep, digging up metal. btw, war in ukraine has the only one reason - resources - there are many metals in eastern ukraine. recources is the only reason there is a genocide of ukrainian people that the whole world is watching.
