Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the effect of yesterday’s move by the Australian Energy Market Operator was to “renationalise the electricity market”, albeit temporarily.

The AEMO suspended the spot market in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria on Wednesday, with Market Suspension Schedule Pricing coming into place.

“The Australian Energy Market Operator as we reported yesterday has shut down the energy market probably for at least a week. This means our tax dollars will have to be paid as compensation to the power companies,” Mr Clennell said.

Well, the privatised model wasn’t working, was it? You can have a “renationalised electricity market”…or you can have load shedding and blackouts and bills to the moon and back.
