Harris County is making a $48 million foray into child care, a move County Judge Lina Hidalgo said will help child care providers recovering from the pandemic.

Harris County created a $4.7 million COVID-19 child care assistance program in 2020, but the county traditionally has not ventured into child care services. The funding marks another expansion of the court’s scope under Hidalgo, a departure from previous decades when the court largely limited spending to public safety, roads, parks and flood mitigation.

The program will prioritize creating child care slots in parts of the county considered child care deserts, where there are few options available to families.Harris County officials narrow search for new elections administrator to two candidates Child care costs are the second most expensive item in families’ budgets — only housing costs are higher, according to Hidalgo, who is running for re-election in November.

Half of infants and toddlers in Harris County who have working parents do not receive formal child care, according to Hidalgo. She added that many of those children are taken care of by relatives in informal child care arrangements. The goal of the program is to close that gap and support families, Hidalgo said.Hidalgo’s Republican opponent in the November election, issued a statement criticizing the county judge’s priorities.

America 🇺🇸 pretend to be richest country in the world. Most modern industrial countries have 12 months paternity leave ( fully paid .. ) once you given birth to a child . Like with health care - we are like a 3rd world country .

WTF is this? Dora has to go.
