PETALING JAYA: Wearing batik on Thursday is allowed in Parliament to support, promote and empower the batik industry in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

In a Facebook post Thursday , Dr Wee, however, said he had forgotten to wear batik to attend the Dewan Rakyat meeting that day.

He did share pictures of other ministers and lawmakers who were wearing batik during the Parliament meeting.Since 2008, Putrajaya has made it compulsory for civil servants to wear batik every Thursday. On Oct 11, de facto law minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar tabled a motion on the matter in the House that was accepted and MPs now have the option of wearing batik every Thursday as a sign of support for the local industry.
