The absence of black writers in the best seller top rankings has nothing to do with the quality of work, but marketing and publicity, a novelist tells Sky News

"For example, I have never walked into a major bookstore and seen poetry by a black author."

She said:"Sometimes, we struggle to get authors to come down, because their publishers won't pay their travel expenses. "But unless it's being seen on a regular basis by an obscene amount of people, it's the only way it's going to sell. However, she does recognise there has been change. Scarlett said while these books are important and have inspired her along the way it was important that The Hive"had nothing to do with racism, that wasn't a running theme", but instead a story everyone could relate to.

This is a nonentity. I do not judge a book by its cover (or colour) but by its content. We are confusing merits and quotas, quality and quantity! These persons are getting free publicity for their bookshop and books.

Bollocks.

Perhaps get a better publicist then, surely if the book is descent it will sell itself 🤷‍♂️

If they can make money from you it doesn’t matter if you are black or not. I don’t look if the author is black or not.

Maybe they aren’t writing books on topics that readers want to read? For me, I love sci-fi and fantasy, that’s what I read.

No it’s buyers choice stop blaming everything on colour of skin. Just look at the programmes on tv hardly any white people these days but are we whinging NO just get on with life.

People saying it would sell if it were good - how do you think books get on the shelf in the first place?

Surely talent is what sells not skin colour

Bore off.

If they’re any good, they’ll sell.

I never take any notice of the author's name when I pick up a book. I buy books (non-fiction and fiction) depending on content

Indeed a decent self pity excuse

Books dont state skin colour of writers because that would be racist

I've never chosen a book based on the authors colour. Give it a rest its just a competitive world.

Zzzzzzzz more fake victim hood

Racism rife on TV hard to find any white people on adverts

because you can tell the colour and gender of someone from their pen name ? can't you Richard Galbraith jk_rowling

There are not many black writers that I have heard of that are worthy of top rankings!

This is bordering on race-baiting.

Maybe they should turn their hands to TV adverts? Plenty of work there for black people.

I don’t care if the author is white, black, man or woman. If I like the sound of a story I’ll read it. Has any EVER not bought a book because the author is black?

if there are asian writers on the english novel market, then it really has nothing to do with skin colour or race does it?

I wonder how many white authors there are in Kenya. 🤔

😂😂😂😂 oh please stop this bullsh*t

We are not America!

Like in every other area, this is to do with insecurity (learned helplessness) driven by false beliefs about white supremacy. The same thing happens within many White working class people who deludedly think they won't be accepted because the class system is rigged against them.

Blacks are not absent when it comes to knife crime are they, pretty much first class, well in the top rankings.

Seriously how many agendas can one two bit news station plug at a time ?

If you're good enough......
