Instead, the organization will locate the new art installation on the northern edge of Plaza de César, at Market and San Fernando streets. That area, which has a stage, is currently a primary venue during the summer months for San Jose Jazz Summer Fest and various Music in the Park concerts. Established in 1797, the plaza is Northern California's oldest public space. The state itself was born on the plaza's eastern edge. The first legislature met there from 1849 to 1851, in an area now known as the Circle of Palms, an open space in front of the San Jose Museum of Art. The plaza also was home to San Jose City Hall for 69 years, up until 1958.
When Urban Confluence chose the winning the project design last year, it had raised $2.5 million for the installation. It expected to need around $100 million from private sources to construct the tower.
