The Special Investigating Unit says Eskom management is cooperating in the probe that has uncovered massive organised crime at the power utility. SIU Eskom

SIU head Andy Mothibi told Parliament that Eskom officials had developed sophisticated methods of hiding their involvement in companies that did business with the entity.“In some instances, Eskom officials approach complete strangers. This is part of the Modus Operandi. They approach complete strangers to set up sub-contractors and bank accounts though which to channel funds to officials. So, this is a deliberate scheme used by officials in terms of fleecing the Eskom.

The power utility says this is due to the failure of two units at the Kendal power station and a unit each at the Kriel and Arnot power stations. On Wednesday, Eskom implemented stage three rolling blackouts, saying it wanted to replenish the dam levels at the pumped storage stations.

1/4 It did not happen. Medupi is reaching a cost of R145b and Kusile R161.4b however, it is not the end,in September president Ramaphosa indicated that an additional R33b will be needed in topping up! Eskom is a money shredder through load shedding!

1/3 Neither Medupi nor Kusile were fully operational and produced far less power than the planned increased capacity of 4.800MV. Both power giants have significantly exceeded initial budgets. S.Africans would have loved to see increased power capacity.

1/2 The construction of Medupi and Kusile initial budgets were R79 b and R81 b respectively and completion dates set to be 2012 and 2014. Nothing went as planned - poor planning, strikes, corruption, mismanagement, delays and budget overruns is what happened! 😏

1/1 At least 680billion was spent on Eskom between 2007 - 2021 to increase its power generation capacity. Load shedding occurred initially in late 2007. Medupi and Kusile power stations were said to be the solution to the country's power problems.
