Gallo Images/ER LombardThe university will mainly focus on the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy.For climate change news and analysis, go to Stellenbosch University has allocated R12 million for research into green hydrogen, which has been touted by the South African government as an energy source that can help lower carbon emissions in sectors such as steel and aviation.
The international partners at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, had pledged an initial $8.5 billion to support the decarbonisation of the South African economy. The other two areas being targeted to limit emissions are electricity, through the decommissioning of coal-fired power stations – and the development of electric vehicles.
"The main focus [of the research] is the production of green hydrogen, which is produced by electrolysis of water using renewable energy resources such as solar and wind energy," said Professor Sampson Mamphweli, director of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University.
