The company which operates the ferry service between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle in County Antrim has ceased trading.

Rathlin Island Ferry Limited operated the service on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure.

It followed several weeks of engagement between the department and the ferry operator about the contract and the financial position of the ferry company.

After using this awful company I’m seriously not surprised this has happened.

Hectic for the residents of Rathlin Island

Heavy seas and heavy hearts on the island today. As a parent of young kids living here, I’m feeling stuck and stunned. Rathlin kids rely on regular ferries for access to education. To add insult to injury, we received this news by text message from the ferry company this morning.

I may get the swimming trucks aired

The Dept is working on a contingency plan. They better work fast!

Oh well - the Stormont minister responsible can set up an emergency service. Oh wait - there is no Stormont Executive so this has been marked 'no further action' - sorry Rathlin islanders.

Surely the local council needs to sort a new tender?

Guess I'll have to canoe it over if I want to stay at Rathlin?
