How government departments deal with small businesses looking to win government contracts will be under the spotlight with a review seeking to weed out any poor behaviour.
doubled to 20 per cent the proportion of contracts, by value, targeted at SMEs, defined as an Australian or New Zealand firm with fewer than 200 full-time equivalent employees, and required they be paid within 30 days. In 2021-22, the government awarded $80 billion in contracts. Of these, about a third, or nearly $25 billion in value, went to SMEs.
“In some cases, small businesses are deterred by a feeling there is a ‘closed shop’ while in other cases they simply don’t know about the opportunities available, or the size of the contract can be simply too big.” “It’s great to see the Australian government’s commitment to be a bigger customer for small businesses,” Mr Billson said.
