The people who sell at farmers markets are a diverse crowd. But it isn’t only their products that distinguish them.

They have different reasons for being there in the first place, different ways of reaching customers—and different ways of turning a profit.The number of farmers markets that were in operation in the continental U.S. in 2019, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture survey estimates.

The markets represent roughly two-thirds of the company’s business, with the rest coming from wholesale customers, restaurants and subscriptions.
