The Justice Department on Wednesday sued the son of West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) and several of the family’s coal mining businesses for more than $7.6 million in unpaid penalties and fees for health and safety violations.

The suit is over an estimated $7.6 million in unpaid civil penalties plus interest, which the DOJ says the mining companies owe for more than 130 alleged violations of federal mining laws from 2018 to 2022.

The fines, which are no longer disputable, are for a variety of safety and environmental violations, including incorrect disposal of waste, improperly maintaining erosion and discharge, and failing to provide operation reports, the suit says. Justice and the companies were ordered more than 50 times to cease mining activities until they had fixed their violations, which are “jeopardizing the health and safety of the public and our environment,” U.S. attorney Christopher Kavanaugh said in the suit.
