The District U-46 School Board has voted to join a national lawsuit against social media companies, charging that access to and use of social media among students has led to more anxiety, depression, thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideation.The District U-46 School Board voted unanimously this week to join a lawsuit filed on behalf of school districts across the United States against social media companies, including Meta Platforms, Facebook Holdings, Snap Inc., TikTok and Alphabet .

Widespread access to and use of social media among students has led to significant risks in anxiety, depression, thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideation among students, according to the resolution authorizing the litigation.The impact of the changed behavior has resulted in the district having to incur costs related staff time, disciplinary proceedings, emotional and social counseling, and medical services, the resolution said.

Frantz Law Group of California is leading the effort. Chicago-based law firm of Franczek will act as local co-counsel for the district, with 25% of any monetary settlement or recovery obtained for U-46 going to the firm in lieu of the district paying legal fees.A free autumn vendor mart will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at The Depot, 319 N. River St., East Dundee.

Sweets, jewelry, handmade gifts, cosmetics and kitchen items will be among the items up for sale, according to a post on East Dundee’s Facebook page.Elgin Community College’s new Center for Civic Engagement will be host its first free public event, “Women in Politics,” from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Jobe Lounge, Building B, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Assistant professor of political science, LaTasha DeHaan, will moderate the panel discussion, an ECC news release said. Participants will include state Sens. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, Laura Murphy, D-Des Plaines and state Reps. Maura Hirachauer, D-Batavia, Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, and Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake.Following the event, state Rep. Nabeela Syed, D-Palatine, will meet with ECC students.
