Crossbasket Castle was restored from the brink of ruin and opened its doors in 2016

A luxury hotel retreat in Lanarkshire that was originally home to Scottish nobility has scooped a prestigious hospitality award.

The AA identifies the top-performing hotels in the UK and Ireland, and the Inspector’s Choice award is known to the industry as the AA’s supreme accolade, recognising hotels that stand out as the best, regardless of size or style.Get all the news from your area – as well as features, entertainment, sport and the latest on Lanarkshire’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic – straight to your fingertips, 24/7.

The land the castle stands on was originally owned by James Hamilton, 1st Laird Hamilton, and the castle was built by Alexander Lindsay, 1st Laird of Crossbasket. Subsequent owners included Charles McIntosh in 1818, the waterproof fabric inventor best known for the McIntosh raincoat. It was also used as a children’s home and a further education centre.

In May 2023, ICMI announced its extended management agreement with Crossbasket Castle, helping support the luxury hotel as it undergoes an ambitious £15 million expansion. Once complete, the hotel and venue will have the capacity for an additional 35,000 visitors each year and provide over 50 jobs for the local area.
