The nuclear power industry is pushing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to cut back on inspections at nuclear power plants and throttle back what it tells the public about plant problems. The agency, whose board is dominated by Trump appointees, is listening.
The Trump NRC appointees and industry representatives say changes in oversight are warranted to reflect the industry's overall improved safety records and its financial difficulties, as the operating costs of the country's aging nuclear plants increase and affordable natural gas and solar and wind power gain in the energy market.
"For an industry that is increasingly under financial decline ... to take regulatory authority away from the NRC puts us on a collision course," said Paul Gunter, of the anti-nuclear group Beyond Nuclear. With what?"With a nuclear accident," Gunter said. Nuclear plant operators amplified their requests at an annual meeting in the Washington, D.C, area this week.
In January, Trump appointees to the NRC disappointed environmental groups by voting down a staff proposal that nuclear plants be required to substantially — and expensively — harden themselves against major floods and other natural disasters. The proposal was meant to be a main NRC response to the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster after Japan's 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
WHAT?
k9luster Sure, that’s a great idea!
Comforting. So not surprised.
Oh HELL no! Remember Three Mile Island, PA, USA, thankfully a catastrophic disaster was avoided however Chernobyl, Pripyat, Ukrainian wasn't so lucky and just most recently Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Japan was it also lucky either and that is just what made news.
While nuclear energy provides safe and clean renewable energy, some accidents can completely wipe out whole entire city, metropolitan area that can have long-lasting devastation because of one simple error, lapse in judgement that cannot be undone.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission need to do more inspections, regulations, and alert the public as about any issues and/or problems otherwise they ALL need to be shutdown.

Oh...... Hell No!!!!!!!!!!!! Increase inspections, they obvious have crazy shit they're hiding......
When one works in an environment daily, one can miss things that a person w/a fresh perspective can see right off when inspecting;believe me, it happens. Any company that does not use regulatory inspection as an efficancy improving resource has something to hide.
Shocking! Trump wants to crack down on Kim playing with the atom, but these guys can do what they want in our backyards and not tell us about it. Sounds like a win for big business and the rich again.
What happens when we have another 3 Mile Island? Will we look like other similar disasters? Trump is a danger to the United States of America. It is clear.
I’m open-minded on nuclear power, and this sounds like an express lane to disaster.
Are you saying that Obama’s appointed officials did not listen?
Don't let this happen!
What the Fukushima are they thinking?!? Nuclear power generation has been a useful component in meeting our power generation needs, but maintaining safety has to trump all other considerations.
Making hay
Great. Hello 3 Mile Island part deux!
