Markus Jooste was previously fined R20 million by the FSCA. The German had also issued a warrant for his arrest, but he failed to appear in court there. The National Prosecution Authority is apparently also busy drawing up a charge sheet against Jooste. TINUS DE JAGER: The massive fine imposed on Jooste – would that be what drove him to this action? Was the fine an attempt to recover the losses or an attempt to punish him, Omri?

So the case against Markus had strengthened considerably. One cannot speculate on what he was thinking, but he had to present himself to the Hawks on Friday – and I don’t know whether he was prepared to possibly spend time in prison. So I think the FSCA has a very strong case to get the money from the estate. The only question is what assets remain in the estate, and how much might have been transferred to other vehicles over time. So the strength of the estate remains to be seen, but I think a large part of it will go to the FSCA.
