It’s now the second most expensive capital in Australia to rent a typical unit. There are few homes available – and some suburbs are worse than others.

Rent for a typical Brisbane unit now costs just a few mangoes shy of $600 a week after climbing $30 in just three months to hit a record high.

Experts say the price hikes reveal more than just a seasonal uptick, but the extent of Brisbane’s rental crisis. “It has remained stubbornly low for two years and it has been below one per cent since 2022. That’s alarming considering a balanced rental market is when the vacancy rate sits between 2 and 3 per cent,” she said.

The Gold Coast is the most expensive place to rent a house or unit statewide, with Broadbeach Waters topping the list at $1350.
