The lowdown on what to do – and what not to do – from three hosts who are legends in their own business lunch times.

Already a subscriber?“Don’t turn up unprepared,” says Jeremy Courmadias. “Do the research. Treat it like a board meeting. You have work to do.”

“I’ve seen a guest pick up the wine list and order a $1000 bottle of wine, and the host has sunk into the floor,” says Jeremy Courmadias.“First, find out about the food and wine, and talk to the sommelier about the menu and drinks for your group,” he advises. “Research who is coming, and work out how to introduce them. Let them know what it’s about, and why they are there.”

Such a strategy can also circumvent any grabs for power across the tablecloth. “You might have someone there who just wants to take over. I’ve seen a guest pick up the wine list and order a $1000 bottle of wine, and the host has sunk into the floor.” “The most important thing is for guests to leave feeling as though they’ve gained something from coming to your event,” says Freeman-Topper. “It could be a surprising connection, a unique experience, or a new inspiration.”
